Early morning birding in the Garden last week was very rewarding. Many birds were feeding which allowed more time for viewing them. Recorded 30 species on one day within a three hour period.

Over the past several years, multiple pairs of Killdeer have nested in the Huntsville Botanical Garden during the Spring breeding season. This year a pair established a late July nest in the North Meadow that produced a single chick.

HBG Cooper's Hawk in flight

Cooper’s Hawks are extremely efficient predators in the Garden.  Skillful hunters, flying at high speeds through wooded forest, they pursue song birds which make up their main food source.  Over the past three years, a pair has nested in the Huntsville Botanical Garden and one of them can be seen at most any time on the Birding Trail.
