Developing a Backyard Wildlife Habitat

This site is dedicated to sharing the joy and excitement of gardening for the birds within a small, suburban backyard.  Proven techniques used in creating the backyard wildlife habitat that have attracted and sustained a wide variety of birds are illustrated with personal photographs of the garden and birds taken within my backyard.  Techniques include methods for feeding, providing shelter and housing, and incorporating water into the garden habitat. The goal is to share the enjoyment and benefits resulting from applying basic principals of wildlife conservation in creating a backyard garden, and thus encourage gardeners and bird enthusiasts to expand the potential pleasures of their backyards with creative birding by gardening for the birds.

Herb Lewis - Honorary Master Gardener
Backyard Wildlife and Habitat Enthusiast

After retiring in 2004, my backyard was certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.  At that time, I began gardening for the birds by creating a wildlife habitat in my backyard garden. This event refocused my approach to gardening.

My yard was featured in the October 2006 issue of Alabama Gardener magazine; and was included in the June 2007 Tour of Huntsville Gardens sponsored by the Huntsville Botanical Garden plus a garden tour sponsored by Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

Since 2004, I have taught the techniques and presented the resulting benefits of developing a backyard wildlife habitat in the Master Gardener training program for classes in Limestone, Madison, and Morgan Counties, Alabama.  I have also taught a course, “Creating a Backyard Wildlife Habitat”, for the UAH OLLI winter quarter in 2009 and 2010.  The techniques were also presented in a workshop sponsored by the Huntsville Botanical Garden, and presented to many garden clubs  and groups in the Huntsville, Alabama area.
